“Thirty-seven million Americans live in poverty. Ten million are black. Nearly 54 million Americans earn under $35,000 a year. Slightly more than eight million of them are black.” This is a significant amount of money, and this quote in particular really stands out to me. Bill Brady is trying to show how black people over generations have just had worse jobs and opportunities because of where they used to be placed in society. Distribution of wealth in America is not even close to evenly distributed between different races. “The median net worth for white households in 1991 was $44,408. For black households, it was $4,604.” I find it incredibly off that a white person’s household could be worth about 40,000$ dollars more than the average African American household. The problem, as Bill Brady says is that the economy is growing but the money made from it is not equally distributed, in fact it isn’t even close. People who are poor, plummet when it comes to money when the economy gets worse, whereas people who aren’t poor loose some, but their always still okay. They can always have more options to protect themselves than the poor do. They have about no defenses , watching their jobs get taken and their savings too. Bill Brady argues that white workers anger gets channeled on blach workers and is a sign of unfair treatment. “If whites of modest means could see their class interest as clearly as they see what they think is their racial interest, they would stand a chance of advancement -- perhaps even through interracial political solidarity.” Says Bill Brady. He sees this as a good way to improve our economy.
